Choral Excellence Association/ACDA Student Chapter
The Choral Excellence Association was established as student group in October, 2011 by UCLA choral students as a way to enhance student participation in the UCLA Choral Program and to create additional performance, leadership, and social opportunities. CEA partnered with the UCLA Chorale for a tour to Phoenix, hosted two concerts in Royce Hall, and provided a number of outreach opportunities.
Last year we revived the local chapter of the national organization for choirs: The American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). The UCLA chapter had been inactive since 1990. Membership in this organization connects our students with other singers and conductors across the nation. This rekindled student group doubled some of CEA’s efforts, but also provided new opportunities and leadership positions. The two organizations were merged Fall of 2013. Together, they provide enriching experiences beyond what is possible in the classroom, including continued performances in Royce Hall, touring opportunities, team building activities, intercollegiate networking, and outreach into the community.
Major Accomplishments Include:
CEA & ACDA partnered with Malwarebytes Corp. to independently sponsor and produce bot the 2013 and 2012 spring concerts in Royce Hall. In 2013, our combined choirs, Philharmonia Orchestra, and soloists performed Mendelssohn’s dramatic oratorio Elijah! In 2012 we performed the MozartRequiem and works by J.S. Bach and Paul Chihara. CEA/ACDA is selling their first ever CD/DVD of this concert.
The CEA applied for the Zipcar/Ford Motors Students with Drive competition, winning both a monthly prize and the first ever Grand Prize in 2012 for the Choral Outreach Program, which in its first two years has directly impacted over 5,000 students!
The CEA also raised funds to help the Chorale travel to Phoenix to perform the Verdi Requiem with the nationally renowned Arizona Musicfest in February, 2012.
CEA/ACDA is a community of students who love music, love working as a team, and are committed to excellence and changing lives through music!
